How to prepare for pharmacy school, but not the requirement
By Lisa Molloy, Time staff writerFor most of the 20th century, the only way to become a physician was through a university or a medical school.
But the profession has become increasingly fragmented over the past few decades, with new programs and training programs being added.
Many schools now have fewer than 10,000 students enrolled, while some have fewer students than that.
With a focus on expanding access to health care, one of the first changes that has made its way into the pharmacy school process was the creation of the National Council on Pharmacy Education (NCPE).
The group has focused on providing health care professionals with skills that will help them take a career in the field.
The goal of this initiative is to expand access to pharmacists, according to NCPE Director Mark Jaffe.
“The goal of the [NCPE] initiative is not to be a barrier to entry for the pharmacy profession, it is to make the education process more affordable for many people who are currently not eligible to be in the profession,” he told Time.
For many students, it’s not a barrier, but rather an opportunity.
“I want to make sure I have a very well-rounded education in my field and that I understand all the important points in this profession and how it relates to the broader world,” said student Emily Hough.
Hough said she was drawn to the program because of its focus on health care.
The university offers a program that offers hands-on learning, including anatomy and physiology.
Students can choose to pursue either an undergraduate or graduate program, and the two can be pursued separately or together.
“We’re looking for people who have already done this, who are able to be able to work with students who haven’t done it before,” said Jaffe of the NCPE.
Huff said that the program was designed to give her a better understanding of the work she’d be expected to do as a pharmacist.
“A lot of people, even if they’ve never done a job before, they can learn some of these skills.
So it’s really important for me to get a real education in this field,” she said.
But the program has its limitations.
The program does not offer a doctorate in pharmacology.
While that’s not the primary goal of being a pharmacoepidemiologist, it does make it difficult to obtain a doctorates.
And while students are encouraged to work as pharmacists after graduation, that doesn’t mean they’ll never need to work in a clinical setting, such as an emergency room or in a pharmacy.
“You don’t want to work on your own or be alone, so I think that is definitely an issue, and I would say that the students have a lot of self-esteem issues,” said Hough, adding that some students don’t like working alone.
Students can work in many different roles in the pharmacy, such a as in a lab, pharmacy salesperson, or even a pharmacy nurse.
Hough said her favorite role was to be part of the pharmacy team.
“It was really just the opportunity to help make the job of pharmacy better,” she added.
Another problem that’s faced by students is that many colleges and universities require a minimum GPA of 2.5 to graduate.
But that may not be enough to get into some schools.
“That’s why I would recommend you study in a school that has a 2.0 GPA, that is not an ‘all-time great school,’ but is a 2,” said Dr. Matthew Schulz, director of the Institute for the Study of Pharmacy at Columbia University.
Schulz said that, as with other health care professions, pharmacists often find it difficult finding jobs.
“Pharmacies are a very diverse profession and it’s a very challenging field to fill,” he said.
“I would say it’s pretty much the same for all health professions, except pharmacy.”
“I think that the challenge is that we’re still not at the point where people are going to be doing their pharmacology job for 20 years,” said Schulz.
“There are still a lot more things that need to be done in this industry.”
For students who have completed their programs and wish to pursue a career as a pharmacy, Jaffe said it’s important to be aware of what it takes to get there.
“There are a lot other ways that a person can get into a pharmacy than simply a degree,” he added.
“You need to go through the application process, go through job interviews, and get the job.”
Schulz, however, said the current system of pharmacy schools is working for a lot fewer students.
“Some of the things that we have are actually making it easier to get an associate degree,” said the medical director of education at Northwestern University.
“If you’re applying to a pharmacy school you’re already an associate.
So you have all of the attributes that you need to have.
It’s a little bit of a bit of an adjustment.”
